Chinese and U.S. officials on Tuesday concluded two days of high?level trade talks in Stockholm, agreeing to push for the extension of a 90?day tariff pause that could help stabilize the global economy.

"According to the consensus between China and the U.S., both sides will continue to push for the continued extension of the pause on the 24 percent part of the reciprocal tariffs on the U.S. side as well as the countermeasures on the Chinese side," Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Li Chenggang said after the talks.

While Li did not indicate the length of the possible extension, U.S. officials said a further 90-day extension is one option, an idea President Donald Trump has previously floated.

The talks took place under the framework of the bilateral economic and trade consultation mechanism, following earlier rounds in Geneva and London. Both sides affirmed their commitment to ongoing dialogue through this established consultative channel.

China's Vice Premier He?Lifeng led the delegation from Beijing, and Washington was represented by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said another meeting between U.S. and Chinese officials is likely to take place in about 90 days.

The Stockholm round built on previous engagement and aimed to prevent a snapback to triple?digit tariffs first introduced by Trump in April. Those tariffs, had they been reimposed, would have threatened global supply chains and disrupted markets. The current discussions serve to stabilize trading conditions while broader economic issues remain unresolved.

A stable, sound and sustainable China-U.S. economic and trade relationship not only serves the development goals of both sides but also contributes to global economic growth and stability, He told reporters in Stockholm, emphasizing mutual benefit and win-win cooperation.

Li described the discussions as "in-depth, candid and constructive," noting that both sides are fully aware of the importance of safeguarding stable and sound China-U.S. economic ties.

U.S. officials said the talks helped them understand China's agenda "much better," with Bessent set to return to Washington to brief Trump, whose approval would be needed for the extension. A deadline for the pause has been set for August?12.

"I think they are developing a much deeper understanding of the pain points of each side and also of the economics associated with any adjustments to tariffs or non-tariff barriers or export controls," John Quelch, executive vice chancellor of Duke Kunshan University, told CGTN.

Quelch said the talks were "very encouraging," adding that they are likely to continue through another 90-day extension.
