The European Union's exports to the United States dropped by more than 10 percent year over year in June, as increasing U.S. tariffs significantly impacted European trade, according to data released by Eurostat on Monday.

Eurozone exports overall decreased by 2.4 percent month over month, while imports increased by more than 3 percent. As a result, the seasonally adjusted trade surplus significantly shrank to €2.8 billion (about $3.3 billion) in June, down from €15.6 billion in May.

Since the beginning of the year, the U.S. has consistently increased tariffs on EU goods. In June, many European exporters faced a 10-percent "reciprocal tariff," carmakers were subjected to 25-percent duties, and steel and aluminum producers faced tariffs of up to 50 percent. In August, a new round of tariffs was imposed at 15 percent on most EU exports to the U.S., significantly higher than the previous average of under 5 percent.

European industrial data has been highly volatile in recent months due to the U.S. tariff policies. Many companies expedited shipments to the U.S. before tariffs were implemented, followed by a sharp decline as duties increased.

Carsten Brzeski, global head of macro for ING Research, said that the stronger euro, high U.S. tariffs, global trade uncertainty, and intensifying competition could continue to weigh on European exports in the coming months.

Meanwhile, trade disruptions are already evident at major European ports. According to WorldCargo News, the Port of Hamburg saw a significant decline – specifically, nearly a 20-percent drop – in trade volume with the U.S. in the first half of 2025. While other trade routes, such as those with the Far East and the Baltic Sea region, experienced growth, the U.S.-Hamburg route faced a notable setback.
