After making landfall Wednesday early afternoon in China's Taiwan region, Typhoon Podul is expected to make landfall again along the coast from Xiamen, southeast China's Fujian Province, to Shantou, south China's Guangdong Province, on Wednesday night to early Thursday morning, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC).
The second landfall is projected to be at strong tropical storm or typhoon strength, with wind speeds of 25 to 33 meters per second, Lyu Xinyan, chief forecaster of the NMC, said Wednesday at a press briefing.
After the second landfall, Typhoon Podul is expected to continue to move in a west-northwest direction, gradually weakening in intensity.
Over the next two days, Typhoon Podul is expected to deeply affect areas from Guangdong and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to southwest China's Chongqing Municipality and other areas, with torrential or severe torrential rain in these regions and extremely torrential rain in some localities, according to the NMC.
"Residents in the affected areas need to take precautions against the typhoon, reinforce doors and windows in advance, store appropriate amounts of drinking water, convenient food, etc., avoid going out during the typhoon's impact period and travel only after typhoon warnings are lifted," Lyu said.
"The public should be alert to landslides, mudslides and other hazards that may be triggered by heavy rainfall and stay away from areas with high meteorological disaster risks," she cautioned.
