China lost to Argentina 5-4 in their final inline hockey game at the 2025 Chengdu World Games at home on Monday, finishing in eighth place with five defeats.
Neither side won any of their previous four games before facing each other to battle for seventh place in the eight-team competition. China opened the scoring in the sixth minute after Zhuang Haojie set up a goal for Liu Chaoyi. Then Li Zhihao doubled their advantage four minutes later.
Argentina launched a fierce counterstrike in the final minutes of the first half. Hernan Insua assisted Rodrigo Irisarri to pull one back before Insua netted the equalizer thanks to a pass from Owen Haiek before the halftime break.
Five minutes into the second half, Zhuang put China ahead again assisted by Liu, but Haiek tied the score again for Argentina eight minutes later. The draw stood less than 30 seconds as Chen Xingnan added the fourth goal for China. Nonetheless, Haiek leveled the score for Argentina for the third time two minutes later.
With 12 seconds to go, Haiek again stepped up to save the day by setting up a game winner for Irisarri. That's the team's first victory in Chengdu and put them in seventh place.
Meanwhile, the United States edged the Czech Republic 4-3 in overtime to claim the gold medal – the first roller sports title awarded at the Chengdu World Games.
The USA took control early, opening the scoring in the sixth minute and closing the first half with a 2-0 lead, while the Czech Republic created only limited chances. In the second half, however, the Americans were unable to build on their advantage, allowing the Czechs to level the game at 3-3 by full time. The USA struck again in extra time with an unstoppable attack to seal the victory.
Earlier in the day, Namibia defeated France 3-2 to earn the bronze medal. The roller sports competitions at the World Games – comprising inline hockey, inline speed skating road and inline speed skating track – will conclude on Sunday.
