U.S. President Donald Trump intends to meet in person with Russian President Vladimir Putin as early as next week and plans to follow up shortly afterward with a trilateral meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, The New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the plan.
During a call with European leaders on Wednesday, Trump said the meetings would include only himself, Putin and Zelenskyy, excluding any European counterparts, according to the report.
A person familiar with the call said the Europeans appeared to accept what Trump proposed. However, it remained unclear whether Putin and Zelenskyy had agreed to the plan, the newspaper noted.
Zelenskyy took part in the call, which also included leaders of Britain, Germany, Finland and NATO, along with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, according to the report.
Trump said on Wednesday in a post on Truth Social that Witkoff, who was in Moscow, "had a highly productive meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin."
"Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come," he added.
The details emerged following a meeting on Wednesday between Putin and Witkoff that Trump described as having achieved "great progress" in a Truth Social post, although later said he would not call it a breakthrough.
Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov said the meeting was "useful and constructive."
Trump took a key step toward punitive measures on Wednesday when he imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on imports from India, citing New Delhi's continued imports of Russian oil. India described the tariffs as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable" and declared that New Delhi would take all actions necessary to protect its national interests.
Trump, who had boasted he could end the Russia-Ukraine conflict within 24 hours of taking office, has given Russia until Friday to make progress towards peace or face new penalties.
Three rounds of Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul have failed to make headway on a ceasefire, with the two sides far apart in their demands.
