California said on Monday the deployment of the National Guard by President Donald Trump's administration was illegal and violated the state's sovereignty and federal law, according to a court filing of its lawsuit against the U.S. government.

About 700 U.S. Marines have been mobilized to respond to the protests in Los Angeles, U.S. Northern Command confirmed on Monday.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said he was informed Trump is deploying another 2,000 guard troops to LA.

Tensions have been rising since Trump activated the National Guard on June 7, an act that Democrats have labeled an unnecessary provocation, after street protests erupted in response to immigration raids in Southern California.
